 | Soon Someday | |
| |
If soon someday, I slip away to that land across the sea-- Don't be sad, rejoice, be glad, for with Jesus I shall be.
And at the gate, there I will wait to greet you on that shore, With all my friends, where time ne'er ends, no parting evermore.
It won't be long you'll sing that song of praise forevermore On peaceful shores with all the scores of those who've gone before.
I'll see you there and we will share the timeless praise of song-- While angels sing to Christ our King, we'll shout through ages long.
Our race is run, our battle's won, with Jesus we shall reign. No pain nor sorrow evermore, no heartaches e'er again!
No tears, no fears, no sickness there, nothing but joy and peace. The half ne'er told will soon unfold, our burdens there released.
No tear-stained eyes, so sad good-byes, no hurt or sorrow there. Our failures past, we're home at last, His glory there to share.
So don't you cry, it's not good-bye, just, "I will see you soon." You make your way to me someday in that land beyond the moon.
Then you will know what you've been told is true and you will see There I am, next to The Lamb, just as I said I'd be.

In mid-1999, I was invited to visit with my [birth] mother (Ann) and oldest sister (Glenna) after a decade's silence. I took my tape recorder with me to play some songs I had written. One in particular was an obscure little song, "Soon Someday", written several years ago. I had set the music to it only a few weeks before. When I pushed "play" for another song that had been well received, that obscure little song began instead. An odd look crossed Ann's face as the room grew quiet... She asked me to send her a copy of it. When our visit ended, I took her hand and asked if she knew Jesus Christ as her Savior. What great joy it gave me to hear her witness that she did, indeed, have a personal relationship with Him! In the months that followed, we exchanged frequent letters and phone calls. In October, she was diagnosed with advanced (inoperable) pancreatic cancer. Glenna later told me Ann played her copy of "Soon Someday", over and over. Her decline was very rapid: in late-January, I got a call that Ann was in hospital, gravely ill. During the evening hours of February 2nd, Glenna called and I spoke with Ann. She knew who I was and assured me all was well with her soul, and we prayed together. At dawn, I got another phone call: Ann was gone from this life. She had requested that "Soon Someday" be played at her funeral and it was. I thank God that I got to see her that last time, earlier in the year, and that I got to speak with her a number of times after she returned home. I thank God that my sister was willing to make the trip, and to keep me posted on how "Mom" (Ann) was doing. I thank God that she was willing to play the little song, for the reassurance that it offered. I know not why our lives went the way they did, but my Heavenly Father does, and that's all that matters. All things rest with Him. Glory to God! Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. James 4:14. You see, I'm only a traveler in this world below--looking for a city, that holds my citizenship, ...whose builder and maker is God. Hebrews 11:10. |
