Storm's A'blowin'

And let us not be weary in well doing:
for in due season we shall reap,
IF we faint not.

Lighting flashes and thunder rolls, but my Lord's still in control

O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. Isaiah 25:1,4.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to HIS purpose. Romans 8:28.

Storm's A'blowin'
The two long-time buddies looked forward to spending their day off fishing in their favorite spot--a small quiet cove off the main river. The "Susie Girl" had a new motor and a recent coat of paint. For two hours the weather was beautiful, but then Lee noticed storm clouds in the distance. The water in the river channel was choppy. Lee insisted they make for the bank to "wait it out" when he heard the first clap of thunder and saw the lightning flash. Jack brushed it off with, "The cove is protected. We've still got time."

Jack would later recall that neither of them saw the tree trunk in the water: the motor was broken when the boat hit it. There were no life jackets on board--they had not thought to bring paddles. The "quiet" cove became boisterous: the boat quickly took on water and sank beneath them. The two buddies tried to swim for land but Lee grew tired and only Jack survived.

Storm's A'blowin'
Sounds like a lot of us, doesn't it? We ignore the warning signs of oncoming storms in our lives; we are too often caught on the short side of safe haven and totally unprepared to deal with that which we then face, aren't we? It's either, "I never saw it coming," or "I didn't think it would be that bad."

There ARE going to be storms in our lives, my friends. Many live under the delusion that Salvation is some kind of "innoculation" (guarantee) against storms in life. It is NOT. It IS the ultimate way to cope, however! When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we then have the added strength of the Holy Spirit in our lives, along with the Promises of God. Yet to have that added strength, to have that ultimate guidance, requires a TOTAL commitment on our part. It means turning loose of the world and our love for the things of the world and submitting our lives, our wills, to God.

You will NEVER experience the BEST that God has for you if you insist on retaining your love of the world and the things of the world! The Bible teaches us: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. I John 2:15-17. So if your "boat" gets shaky when the storms hit, be sure to check and see if you are anchored to anything other than Jesus Christ!

Storm's A'blowin'
And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Mark 4:35-41.
Notice several things in that passage of scripture, that are so like us today:
  1. Master, carest thou not that we perish?
"God, you just don't care about ME or YOU wouldn't have let this happen to me!" How quickly we forget, And we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to HIS purpose. Romans 8:28.

  2. Peace, be still.
When Jesus arose and rebuked the wind, ALL He said was those three words: "Peace be still". The very next sentence of scripture tells us, And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He didn't launch into a screaming contest with the elements. He didn't begin a great flowery speech. He didn't list all the problems that were taking place. He simply addressed the problem with the solution: "Peace, be still." (Peace is "siopao": to be calm; still is "phimoo": to muzzle, put under control).

  3. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
Those in the boat with Him had forgotten all they had previously seen Him do. All that He had taught them was overcome with fear and despair. Just like us today: God has already done so VERY much for us all, yet the very next storm that begins to blow, we start in, "Oooooh God, Ooooooooh God, Ooooooooooooh God!" We keep forgetting, ALL the promises of God are yea and amen in Christ unto the glory of God by us (II Corinthians 1:20). Nor do we remember, The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. Nahum 1:7.

  4. And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Not only did they fear the storm, they feared The Man and the Power of The Man. They were astounded at His Authority! But He gave us that same authority: Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and GREATER works THAN THESE shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:11-15.
Today, we refuse to make a total commitment to God in our lives, we refuse to study His Word, we refuse to seek that which He promised we could have. We go about powerLESS, afraid of that which we don't know, denying that it even exists!

No wonder we don't have any faith to sustain us when the storm's a'blowin': we don't believe what the Bible tells us to begin with! (Mostly because we don't know what has been made available to us!) We go about prattling, "Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world," and don't have Idea One what it means! We refuse to give up our fiendish clamoring for the things of this world to spend time in prayer and praise and worship! So we make fun of it, theologize it away, rationalize it according to the world's interpretation and standards and then wonder why we are have no power, no authority, no faith.

Storm's A'blowin'
So how are you handling the storms blowing in your life? Jesus said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27.

Storm's A'blowin'
Paul wrote to the Ephesians, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the KNOWLEDGE OF HIM: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may KNOW what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the EXCEEDING GREATNESS of His POWER to US-WARD who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far ABOVE ALL principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put ALL things UNDER his feet, and gave him to be the head over ALL things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Ephesians 1:17-23.

Storm's A'blowin'
We go to great lengths to take care of our physical bodies and our personal possessions, but is it at the cost of our eternal souls? The Bible tells us that our "outward man" perishes, but the "inward man" (spiritual) is renewed day by day. So into what are we investing our utmost? Into that which is only temporary, or that which is eternal?

For ALL things are for YOUR sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look NOT at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the THINGS WHICH ARE SEEN ARE TEMPORAL; but the THINGS WHICH ARE NOT SEEN ARE ETERNAL. II Corinthians 4:15-18.

Storm's A'blowin'
Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Isaiah 58:9-11.

Once again, we find tremendous promises from our Heavenly Father (if we are willing to meet the conditions for them). Not only will He make our darkness as the noonday (take away the gloom in our lives), He will guide us continually and He will satisfy our soul during dry times. We've all experienced those "dry times", haven't we? Those times when we are "shut up" inside--we cannot seem to "reach" the Lord. Those are "dry times", my friends.

This passage of scripture also tells us He will make fat our bones. A "fat bone" is a healthy bone--it has a strong interior. And we are further told that He will make us like a watered garden. We all know what happens if the plants in a garden are not watered, don't we? And there is very little value to a "dry" spring, isn't there?

Storm's A'blowin'
Yes, storms will come, my friends, but we have a Savior Who loves us so much that NOT ONLY did He die on an old rugged cross for our sins, but He sent us "A Comforter": And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16,17.

Now won't you remember that the next time those old storms start a'blowin' around you?
